The Met Gala 2021/2022 Ranking PART 1: "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" - T.E.C.

(*This is the first part to my two-part series of the Met Gala outfits. This part [part 1] will be based on the 2021 Met Gala, while the second part will be based on the 2022. Met Gala. Enjoy!)

(**Sorry if there are a few random periods or spaces in the middle of some sentences - the keyboard I'm using is very sensitive and again, sorry about that. Enjoy!

The Met Gala is a very well-known event in which many famous people and celebrities join together to display many wondrous looks of fashion and statements of craft. They also eat. For some reason. > The 2022 Met Gala was actually a two-part "Costume Institute Exhibition," the first part taking place on September 18th, 2021, with the second part taking place earlier this year on May 2nd, 2022. Today I will be ranking the outfits of the gala, the two themes being "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion," and "Gilded Glamour." Some of the outfits for the first part of the gala were a bit 'off,' as Anna Wintour, the head of the operation, didn't announce the theme of 'the future of fashion' until the actual day of the event. Hence why many people chose outfits relating to the past of American Fashion. However, a good majority of the outfits for the second part of the event were very off-theme just because no one really understood it and no one really knows what's going on in Anna WIntour's mind anyways, soo..

This post will be less of a ranking and more of a 'tier-list.' I will be announcing the category and then adding all the celebrities that fall under it. The ranks read as follows;

  • IM SCREAMING - This tier is reserved for the best one or two outfits of the night. The outfits that take my breath away and make me really appreciate the message of fashion. The top-tier fashion statements.

  • LOVE IT - This tier is for the pieces that are really great and look really good, but don't make all the marks. Still a lovely fashion piece, just not the best of the night.

  • GOOD - This tier is the "watch later" of the ranking. Not exactly the best, but not bad. The main mid-tier where all the average outfits lie.

  • YOU TRIED...? - This tier is for the pieces that didn't do the best in practice. For the outfits that were honestly more on the bad spectrum and don't really deserve anything higher.

  • BAD - The standard bad category for all the outfits that were not the best. That were bad. Yeah, they were not good. For all the outfits that were lowkey garbage.

  • AMBER TURD - These outfits were absolutely not it. They were either plain terrible or even offensive. Just like Ms. Turd. These outfits were worn by designers that did not know what they were doing, and they should honestly not be invited to the gala again. Just kidding. The outfit does not correlate with the celebrity. ... Moving on.

That is the basic premise of this list, so let's get started! I will not be including every single celebrity who attended the event, as there was so many, but I will be including ones that served in terms of making a statement. There might also be some odd-balls or wild cards, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Let's get to the ranking. The full list of celebrities that I will be including are;

  • Billie Eilish

AMBER TURD:

Aka the worst of the worst this year had to offer.

Justin Bieber/Hailey Bieber in Maison Drew and Saint Laurent w/ Tiffany and Co.

ree

Justin is wearing a suit and Hailey is wearing a plain black dress. Come on guys, this the Met. They really couldn't have tried any less. It isn't on theme and it's like they picked these outfits up as they were getting into the car on the way over. It's just plain boring.

Lily-Rose Depp in Chanel

ree

This outfit is giving very much 2000's Barbie Doll, and it isn't good. The belt hanging off the front is a bit of an eye sore, and the cut is just really weird. The hair is fine, but it's just not fun to look at.

Ciara in Dundas

ree

This outfit is absolutely horrible. I know that she is married to a football player and is wearing his number and a Super Bowl ring, but the outfit is not good at all. I think it's the color that's really off-putting, but I don't like it at all. The hair too, I don't know. It's very bad.

Naomi Osaka in Louis Vuitton

ree

At this point, do I really need to specify why these outfits are so low? I'm definitely not understanding the message of most of these, but from looks alone, this outfit is very bad. The hair looks like Cindy Lou Hoo on crack, and there is really nothing good about it. Yikes.

Kit Harington/Rose Leslie in Saint Laurent and Oscar de la Renta

ree

Honestly, this is very similar to what Justin was wearing, but in a way, worse. Kit is wearing a plain suit that doesn't look like it fits him at all, and Rose is wearing a dress that looks like how a 2nd grader would color Belle (from Beauty and The Beast)'s dress. It's giving mustard.

Channing Tatum in Versace

ree

Again, this is just a plain black suit. It doesn't even have a pinch of variety like Kit has. It's bad. His very bald head is also really distracting. This whole look is just plain and boring and doesn't deserve to be featured in the Met Gala.

Hailee Steinfeld in Iris Van Herpen and Jimmy Choo

ree

This looks literally nothing like her, and while that might have been the point, it doesn't look good. It also has nothing to do with the theme and looks like that one way to sweet cookie at the Christmas party that no one wanted. Sorry, Hailee, but you're a mess.

Cara Delevingne in Dior and Jimmy Choo

ree

When I was looking through these outfits deciding where to put theme, this was actually the last one we reviewed, having seen all of them at the time, this was really disappointing, and I feel like that was one of the main contributions to her being placed in the bottom tier. The outfit is also really ugly. AOC did the same thing but 100x times better. We'll get to her later though. In the meantime, she looks good in the bottom tier of my list here.

>>>

BAD:

The outfits that weren't the lowest of the low, but not good by any means.

Lil Nas X in Versace

ree

ree

ree

Ok, so this year, Lil Nas X actually served 3 separate looks. All of which were bad. I think that someone might want to put him higher up, mainly because of who he is and the fact that his outfit is so big and shiny, but all 3 of them are really bad. The first one is not the complete worst, but they keep getting gradually worse as you go on. It really isn't the best, and the combination of different outfits don't blend well and look pretty bad together. R.I.P.

Megan Fox in Dundas and Jimmy Choo

ree

The most districting part of this outfit is the bangs, obviously, and I feel like they're a statement piece. Other than that, they're really ugly. I don't like them. The only thing Megan really has going for her is the color of her dress. alone. Otherwise, it's just not good. She also looks really uncomfortable in this, and the dress itself looks really tight and like it doesn't fit her well. Yikes.

Grimes in Iris Van Herpen

ree

This outfit is giving very much medieval times, and it does not look good. The only really good thing she has going for her is the white-to-black gradient, but other than that, this outfit looks pretty bad. Not just alternative - bad.

Lorde in Bode

ree

This outfit really needs no explanation. The worst part of this outfit to me (besides the mere material of it) are the shoes. They're just so absolutely trash that Ms. Lorde earned her spot in one of the lowest ranks. The only redeemable thing about this outfit would be the bag, but nothing else.

Simone Biles in Area

ree

Even though we all love Simone here, this outfit is really not it. If I'm not wrong, this is the first time she has ever been to the Met Gala, and this was not a good introduction piece. It's not on theme, and quite simply, it's just bad. Sorry, Simone.

Addison Rae in {vintage} Gucci

ree

This outfit was very inspired by Kourtney Kardashian's Christmas dress, and honestly, Kourtney did it better. This dress does not look that good on Addison, and I feel like she should've gone with a different look for her Met debut.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in Brother Vellies

ree

The main message of this dress is pretty obviously "Tax The Rich," and it was extremely brave of her to show up to the literal Met Gala in something so controversial. Then again, if she didn't add the text, it would just be a plain white dress. At the Met Gala. The dress' material also looks really bad, and this whole look is just not the best.

Evan Mock in Thom Browne

ree

This outfit kind of speaks for itself. I feel like what he tried to do was done so much better by both Timothee Chalamet and Pete Davidson, and in addition to this, under the mask he had shaved pink hair. It's really not the best. The shoes too- it's a mess.

Zoe Kravitz in Saint Laurent

ree

Let me start out by saying that this outfit is very American. Still, I don't see the future in this, and I definitely feel like what Kendall did was 100x better than this. The outfit also looks really tight and uncomfortable, so I don't like it.

Shawn Mendes/Camilla Cabello in Michael Kors

ree

Alright, the leather jacker with no shirt on is a nice touch, but we're not looking at that, we're looking at the outfit as a whole. In general, both of these outfits aren't the best, and the purple looks like she got everything in that outfit from Party City. Shawn also really though he did something with those two belts. Yikes.

Kristen Stewart in Chanel

ree

This outfit as a whole is really just an eyesore. The pants aren't good because they look like plastic tube, and the jacket looks really uncomfortable and like it would be irritating on the skin. This whole look is just really bad, and the hair isn't doing it any favors.

Saweetie in Christian Cowan

ree

This outfit looks as if a designer high off of RedBull and GatorAid took a few different aspects of other dresses, blended them together, and chose a really raunchy, trashy color palette. This entire thing looks really bad and it seems like it was like tie-dyed or something.

>>>

YOU TRIED:

I see what you were going for, but it didn't turn out good.

Kim Kardashian in Balenciaga

ree

While this outfit was definitely one of, if not the one outfit that caused the biggest talk within the fashion community this year, other than the stir Kim caused, I just don't like the outfit. It isn't on theme and I don't like it. Sorry, Kim.

Jennifer Lopez in Ralph Lauren

ree

I definitely see what Jennifer. was going for with this outfit in terms of the cowboy hat and the overall western feel, and the outfit does look kind of good, but it is just really tacky. It also looks really uncomfortable and a bit tight. I don't know, I just don't like it that much.

A$AP Rocky in ERL

ree

I definitely see what he was going for in terms of wearing blankets and stuff during 2020, but this outfit just looks heavy. If I were in his shoes I would want to either go home or get this outfit off as soon as possible. I don't know, the vibes are good, but the look isn't the best.

Gigi Hadid in Prada

ree

I see what she was going for in terms of old Hollywood, (the gloves are a good touch) but the overall cut of the dress isn't the most flattering. She should have worn this to an awards show, not the literal Met Gala.

Emma Chamberlain in Louis Vuitton

ree

By looks alone, the outfit isn't the best. However, she does look very expensive and very rich. Looking expensive and rich is definitely on theme, so I'll give her that much. In the meantime though, she needs to get herself a new dress.

Troye Sivan in {an ALTU} by Joseph Altuzarra w/ Cartier

ree

Alright, I definitely see the message Sivan was trying to send across, and this was pretty brave of him to show up to the Met Gala in this, but other than that, it's just black. It's not that good, and the cut is a bit weird. I see the intentions, though.

Dan Levy in {custom} Loewe

ree

Ok, the smolder alone should be putting him in the bottom tier, but we're going to ignore that. Like Sivan, I see the message that was trying to be put across, but the outfit just looks really busy and really messy to me. I don't know, it's just not my favorite.

Olivia Rodrigo in Saint Laurent

ree

Sorry for the low quality image, but this outfit was just not good. It was very brave of Olivia, of all people, to show up to the Met Showing a lot of skin, but I think the dress is kind of ugly and I feel like it's been done before. It's not too special.

Frank Ocean in Prada w/ Homer

ree

To begin, I really like the 'representation' (if you could call it that) with the DreamCore hat, but other than that and the really distracting baby, he just wore a black outfit. I'm starting to see a theme here. Yeah, people need to stop wearing plain black looks.

Kaia Gerber in Oscar de la Renta

ree

Speak of the devil, here we have yet another black outfit. At the Met Gala. It's honestly just getting worse as we continue. Considering that Oscar de la Renta was the same person who styled Billie Eilish, I feel like Gerber was almost duped in a way, I don't know. Yeah, it's not good.

Kacey Musgraves in Ralph Lauren

ree

I'm sorry, (I'm really not) but she looks like the roll of duct tape that escaped and gained consciousness and then took over a human body and became a country artist. Yeah, this outfit does not look good on her and it isn't my favorite.

Kate Hudson in Michael Kors

ree

When I was ranking these outfits, she was also one of the last ones I ranked, and I was as underwhelmed then as I am now. I feel like this was done by so many other people, and nothing about this outfit really stand out. At all. Rest in peace.

GOOD: The outfits that I liked but didn't quite love.

Rihanna in Balenciaga w/ Telma West and Tyler Ellis

ree

Honestly, I really like this outfit, especially when she was with A$AP Rocky as I think that his colors really let her shine and have her Rihamoment. I like this and it looks super intentional. It is also on theme - POV your rich aunt at a dinner part in 2030.

Megan Thee Stallion in Coach

ree

This outfit is giving very much Old Hollywood, but this time it actually works! I think her hair pairs really well with the overall shape of the dress, and I like the vibe overall. it does look a bit tight around the stomach, though. Good anyways.

Pete Davidson in Thom Browne

ree

This outfit overall looks really intentional, and I like it. He really made this outfit look so masculine and feminine and futuristic and so much more all in one sweep. I am a big fan, and this was probably one of the best looks of the night from a man.

Lili Reinhart in Christian Siriano w/ Kwiat and Fred Leighton

ree

Again, sorry for the low quality, but this outfit is really great! I love the spring 2019 vibes, and I think that this. outfit. really brought a wave of fresh air into the Met Gala among all these boring plain black outfits. *cough* literally half of everyone who came *cough*

LOVE IT:

The outfits that really hit the spot for me!

Kendall Jenner in Givenchy

ree

Every time I look at this dress, I am blown away by how wonderful it is. It might be that Kendall is literally the most beautiful woman on the planet, but this outfit is giving very much Kim's wet look and Britney Spears in Toxic. I love it!

Timothee Chalamet in Haider Ackerman and Converse

ree

Again, it could have something to do with just how handsome of a man he is, but this outfit looks really good on him. Just like with Pete, this looks really intentional, and I see both the past in the streetwear aesthetic and the future in the high-fashion aesthetic.

Emily Ratajkowski in Vera Wang and Stuart Weitzman

ree

Seriously, every single person in these top two tiers are extremely attractive and it's unfair and I'm crying. Anyways, this outfit is giving very much The Hunger Games 2 and the color goes really well with her hair, makeup, and skin tone. I really like it.

Quannah Chasinghorse in Dundas

ree

The dress is not shown fully in the picture, but the look is really big, shiny, and simply glamorous. With the addition of her tattoo (yes, that's a tattoo), and all of her jewelry, this outfit is honestly breathtaking, and she has a far road ahead of her in the modeling industry.

Lupita Nyong’o in Versace w/ De Beers

ree

When I think of American fashion, one of the first thing that comes to mind is denim. Denim was seriously underrepresented this year, and Lupita really served that all while giving up some great hair and another fresh breeze in the midst of terrible plain black and white dresses.

Iman in Harris Reed

ree

Y'know, I think that this has something to do with this outfit being one of the only. really big and shiny outfits of the night. In practice, it doesn't look the entire best, but who cares anymore. We all just got out of the pandemic, and we were expecting looks like Iman's throughout the night. She wasn't on theme and didn't really understand the assignment, but this outfit deserves to be this high because she knows that we're all suffering at home and she served just what we were asking for.

NikkieTutorials in {a piece inspired by Marsha Pete Johnson, a trans activist}

ree

This outfit was literally on the border of making it into the top tier, but my friend who was. ranking. it with me was PREVENTING that so yeah. You know who you are. (jk love u bestie <3). I love how this looks like flowers flying in the wind, and I. just really love everything about it.

IM SCREAMING:

The absolute best of the best this year's Met Gala had to offer.

Natalia Bryant in Connor Ivers

ree

This outfit was absolutely stunning. The first time I saw it, my mouth literally hung open. I was in shock. I am just privileged that I get to be sharing this with you guys. I hope you'll appreciate the powerful message this work of art is sending as much as I do.

Kim Petras in Collina Strada

ree

Of course it wouldn't be a true Met Gala without the American fashion icon that is horse girl. This piece moved me on a deeply spiritual and existential level, and I really love everything about it. This outfit alone is the definition and the peak of true fashion.

Alright, enough with the memeing, let's get into the real top outfits of the night.

Gemma Chan in Prabal Gurung w/ Harry Winston

ree

Just the photo alone would convince almost anyone to put her straight to the top The subtlety and power she is putting across through this look is really incredible and makes for a wonderful viewing experience every time I look at it. I love the color, the shoes, the hair... simply everything.

Tessa Thompson in Iris Van Herpen

ree

This outfit is simply stunning. She took the color from Emily Ratajkowski, the style from Grimes, the boots from Kacey Musgraves, the hat from JLo, and still managed to add her own flare. This outfit is basically a compilation of some of the greatest outfits of the night mixed together with a sprinkle of Thompson's own charm and style.

Yara Shahidi in Dior

ree

I know it might not seem like much at first, but I feel like the more you look at it, the better it gets. She really took what Emma Chamberlain and Iman had and ran with it. She's giving both Old Hollywood and Future High Fashion, and I honestly do love everything about it.

And finally, the best look of the night goes to...

Billie Eilish In Oscar de la Renta

ree

You know, this outfit can only be summed up in two words; "Simply Beautiful." You know, to see someone who can from basically nothing in the middle. of 2019 to rise to this fame and this power is both extremely impressive and severely inspiring. Billie, a small-town kid from nowhere showed up to this event alongside these extremely famous well-known celebrities and completely demolished them. She came into the Met and the energy changed. Not only. did she do that, but she made a deal with Oscar de la. Renta that the could not use any more fur, and that is just amazing on her part. The only thing I could classify this as, and the only title worthy of this much of an impact on not only fashion culture as we know it, but culture as a whole is that this was a Cultural Reset.

Thank you so much for reading this entire post to the end! This is by far the biggest post I've ever put out, and it took me so long to complete it. I really hope you enjoyed it, and I'll seee you on the next one! Goodnight, Tri-State Area. - T.E.C.

(*This ranking is extremely inspired by the ranking done by the YouTuber Gloom. Please go watch her stuff and go subscribe to her. She is the best person in the entire world.)
